Hello world, I am an amateur programmer. My all time favourite programming language has got to be C, it`s easy to get lost in large projects but any programmer worth his salt has got to appreciate the pure under the hood power of C, second only to Assembly Language and the OS work horse for the last 30 years or more. I now use Smalltalk, Python, Java, PHP, Visual Basic, C#, Greenfoot and of course C++. For web servers PHP(no Perl or Ruby), Angular Javascript and moving along with HTML5. Suggestions for up and coming programmers, first timers go for Python. Python has a nice little interpreter called idle where you can test things out and get immediate results. I would also suggest Smalltalk, a version of Squeak, moving on to VisualWorks if you master it. Smalltalk has a steep learning curve but once you hit the top of the curve productivity moves along very fast. Greenfoot is a nice java game maker based language designed for education along with BlueJ another Java education tool with lots of resources. Good luck, you will need it, the competition is tough out there.
