In order to prevent and treat athlete’s foot, Dr. Eric Treiber believes the best method is too avoid going barefoot in public places, like locker rooms or gym floors. Also, using OTC creams with compounds like Terbinafine Hydrochloride or powders like gold bond, on your feet. The powders help keep your feet dry, and medicated creams help kill and prevent fungus. However, after coming across a recent study, Dr. and his staff are now recommending a special tip to their patients, that few would have thought of in the past, involving your laundry! Israeli researchers have done studies using socks laced with fungus. They washed these socks in both a room-temperature wash cycle and a hot-water wash cycle. They found that 36% of the socks washed in the room-temperature cycle remained contaminated while only 6% of those socks washed in the hot-water cycle remained contaminated. This finding shows us that we can vastly decrease our chances of fungal contact and getting athlete’s foot by doing our laundry in hot-water cycles as opposed to lukewarm cycles.
