Creativity drives me. I first started coding in middle school because I wanted to create my own computer games, not just play them. However, going forward, I became interested in sustainability and farming. After getting an AA degree I set out to learn organic growing instead of attending university. In 2004 I started my own small vegetable farm. Almost immediately it became apparent that programming could be a great asset to my business. On top of all of the typical benefits of software for businesses (automated emails, etc), even on the tiniest farm there is an incredible amount of data that can be tracked and used to increase efficiency. But, without the help of computers, there`s just not enough time for a small operation to easily record and use that data. I was using Google Sheets to record what data I could, but spreadsheets can only do so much without full fledged coding! I started learning JavaScript to use Google App Script to turn my spreadsheets into little programs to help with automating emails and CSA signups, scheduling my labor and predicting my cash flow based on my crop plan (without having to buy software). By the end of 2017 it was apparent that I was outgrowing the leased 1/3 acre I was farming. In 2018 I married and my wife and I bought permanent property. However, starting a new operation is no easy or inexpensive task (can`t move the soil or infrastructure I built up on the prior land for the past four years). Therefore, with a rediscovered love of coding and a lack of savings, I decided I would return to school for computer science and then work as a programmer to generate the capital needed to start up a truly well-planned, sustainable and intelligent farming operation on our land. I`d love to develop software to help small farmers get a foothold in the market. Smart, organic farming can make one a good living, but it`s not easy. Incredibly effective growing techniques are out there, but not widely known. Cutting edge business software is even more rare in the sustainable farming sector. I want to combine the two and provide access to economically sound, healthy farming for all.
