What Can Be Mistaken for Neuropathy? While neuropathy is one of the high-risk conditions today, it is unfortunate that it is easy to misdiagnose it. The condition is confusing, and high variability neuropathy symptoms make its diagnosis challenging, increasing chances for misdiagnosis. At Advanced Spine Joint & Wellness Center, our chiropractors have a range of techniques to ensure the accurate diagnosis of neuropathy. These techniques include carefully going through the patient’s medical history and doing physical, neurological, genetic, and body fluid tests, among other relevant ways to ensure accurate neuropathy diagnosis. More tests help determine the type and severity of neuropathological conditions. Some tests include physiologic tests of the nerve function, neuropathology tests of the nerve appearance, autonomic testing, and radiology imaging tests. Despite all the available diagnosis techniques and equipment, it is sad that some conditions can easily be misdiagnosed as neuropathy. The similarity between the conditions and neuropathy are some of the causes of these cases of misdiagnosis. Some of the common health conditions often mistaken as neuropathy include. Neurologic lupus: Like neuropathy, lupus of the nervous system also damages the nerves and the surrounding tissues by causing inflammation. Some of the common symptoms between lupus and neuropathy include tingling, numbness, and inability to move some parts of the body. Sjogren’s syndrome: It is a rheumatic disease characterized by inflammation in the joints, skin, muscles, and other body tissues. The condition has been proven to result in neuropathy in some cases. Other neuropathy conditions are Rheumatoid arthritis, vasculitis, severe inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, and Guillain-Barre syndrome.
