I’ve spent the last 19 years working in the semiconductor industry. I started out working at Samsung in 1997 as an entry-level equipment operator making minimum wage. Within a year, I moved up to an equipment technician position. By year five, I was the equipment lead. I supervised the day-to-day maintenance and schedule, telling the junior technicians the repair schedule for the day. I had people working under me who had higher degrees, but I had more experience. I was laid-off after working 13 years at Samsung Austin Semiconductor, and have had a few contract jobs and one permanent job since then. Lately, I’ve found the industry shrink drastically in Austin. As someone that has always had a plan in life, I find myself in uncharted waters. I’ve always felt that semiconductor was the career I would be in until retirement. I’ve come to the conclusion that if I want to stay in Austin, it’s time I change fields. I’ve always enjoyed working in the tech industry and building computers as a hobby. As I am a person of an inquisitive nature, I have always wondered about the software side of the industry. I’ve taken a few computer courses at I.T.T. Technical Institute but had to stop due to work hours at Samsung. This has always bothered me since I believe that you should always finish what you start. Rather than returning to I.T.T., I feel a short and specialized school is what is best for what I hope to achieve. I think that Austin Code Academy is the best school to help me achieve my goals. As of now, I want to know more about the major coding languages; Html, SQL, Python, and Ruby on Rails in a structured environment. I have been self-studying, reading books and taking a code academy class online. In my first year of taking this coding academy class, I would like to gain a working knowledge of coding and of the industry, to secure a position with a company as a Software Developer, Stack Developer, or Coder.
