Don Fussell, chairman of the computer science department at the University of Texas at Austin, gave me my first programming job. The job involved learning this new language called C using a PDP 11/45 and writing a tool that parsed Caltech Intermediate Form, a VLSI layout language, and printing the various chip layers on a dot-matrix printer.
