I was born and raised in Wilmington, NC. After high school I joined the Navy to be part of the Navy`s nuclear power program. Following nearly two years of technical training, I was assigned to the USS Enterprise as a Reactor Operator and Electronics Technician. Following my discharge from six years of service, I went to work for a semiconductor company. The work was interesting but primarily associated with working with chemicals, which was outside my preference. Subsequently I joined Siemens Westinghouse as an Field Service Engineer working on control systems for gas turbines for power generation. This job was also not a good fit, and I was eventually hired as a technician at Nortel Networks testing and troubleshooting synchronous optical network equipment. The dot-com bubble burst resulted in layoffs, and I was hired as a Control Room Supervisor at the Salem Nuclear Power Plant in New Jersey. Following 18 months of training on the Salem systems and procedures, I was assigned to an Operations crew to perform oversight of the reactor control and generation systems. As a supervisor, I performed personnel assessments. I also was assigned to several event investigation teams. In 2008, I moved to California to work as a procedure writer at the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant. This job included developing and maintaining procedures associated with normal operation, alarm response, and abnormal operations (event recovery). This position required knowledge and understanding of all associated systems, operating experience, and regulatory requirements. I was a member of the Emergency Response Organization, participating in routine drills and event response. In 2018 I moved back to North Carolina to be closer to family. I am currently working via contract as a procedure writer for Westinghouse Nuclear on procedures for a new construction project. I look forward to shifting gears by developing new skills as a web developer and either making myself more marketable in the commercial nuclear power field or finding work in an entirely new field.
