For the bulk of the 20th century, academic libraries have principally served as repositories of curated physical collections used to support the research, information, and recreational needs of students, disciplinary faculty, staff, and their institution's curricula. Within that era, information literacy instruction directly reflected a curated-physical-collection orientation, and as a result, it was narrow, highly pragmatic, mostly skills-based, and far from theoretical.
