I got my start in programming in the 80s, writing BASIC on TRS-80 computers in the school library. Two years of a high school Voc-Tech class qualified me to get a job doing data entry for a small factory, but at that job I soon learned of relational databases and SQL while working with R:Base, and then MicroFocus COBOL, Pascal, and rudimentary Unix. In the 90s, I switched jobs to a larger information technology firm, where I picked up programming and administration experience with dBase, MSAccess, Sybase, Oracle, and MSSQL databases, plus rudimentary C programming, assembly programming, Unix Shell scripting, PowerShell, JavaScript, Active Server Pages, and PHP.
