Work for Medecins Sans Frontieres/Doctors Without Borders as GIS and Technology Adviser (prior to that, 10 years as a field worker; I`m not a techie by background, I`ve basically been a project manager for a medical humanitarian agency). Like maps, like code, but expert in neither. Figure it out as we go along. Believe that we now have the possibility to map the entire world using open imagery (UAVs and so forth), FOSS GIS, and smartphones with half-decent data collection software (as opposed to Starbucks-locating software). Existing hardware will do the trick, it just needs the right code on it. No reason why the people of Congo and Bangladesh can`t have the same kind of geographical data infrastructure (which is a fundamental component of public health infrastructure) that we have in the wealthy world; we just have to put the software in their hands.
