I work as DevOps engineer for production applications at the intersection of production and IT. On the production side are aggregates such as packaging machines, slitter winder or even paper machines and high-bay warehouses. Mostly with a PLC as a process control system, sometimes also hardware developed by the manufacturer. On the other hand, systems like an SAP or a quality system, quite IT 4.0, who want to communicate with the aggregates. Here I cooperate with the different manufacturers and try to persuade one or the other to adapt their technical interface so that the systems can communicate with each other. Sometimes that does not work and then I develop a middleware that acts as a translator. The choice of technologies often falls victim to constraints. But that does not mean that current developments such as .NET Core are ignored. Furthermore, I personally supervise the production, know the processes at the aggregates and to a certain extent also behind them. A personal approach to the workers is very important to me, as it is the most likely way to get to the root of the problems. Go and See is indispensable. I like to look at issues directly, let me show the steps that lead to it and, if a solution is not immediately available, try to find temporaries with the worker. Also, various systems have accumulated over time that are not production specific but otherwise found no home in the department, e.g. the payroll software, a document management or various data collection tools. Here I am only responsible for the operation and my knowledge ends after the login. Close cooperation with the relevant departments is essential One of my personal ambition is software development. Although I do not develop any operating systems, even smaller software projects benefit from a good infrastructure, such as: a central source code management.
